About

Object storage is a storage architecture designed to manage large volumes of unstructured data (photos, videos, audio files, search datasets, etc.). This architecture is compatible with Amazon's S3 REST API.
Access to these objects is via S3 REST APIs, and not via an operating system file explorer.
Each object corresponds to a distinct and autonomous data repository, made up of three parts: a globally unique identifier that is used to process the objects, the metadata that describes the data, and finally the raw data.
The metadata is of two types: system metadata, containing information about the raw data and authorized processing (hash code, version, retention, rights, etc.), and user metadata, in XML format, which can accommodate up to 10,000 elements for a maximum of 1GB per object.
This S3-type space relies on other UNIGE services, such as data monitoring and replication to a backup site. The service also offers the possibility of configuring additional options at end-user level, such as the number of versions to be kept for each object and/or different retention periods. Management of S3 storage (users, buckets, etc.) is delegated to the tenant manager.
The annual rental charge for object storage is CHF 75/TB/year, in multiples of 1TB, payable on order.  It is renewed tacitly each year.
The University of Geneva offers an object storage solution hosted locally on the UNIGE infrastructure and accessible worldwide. The request to create an S3 object storage must be made by a member of the UNIGE.
